Bassano del Grappa

The town of Bassano del Grappa is located about 50 kilometres northwest of Venice.

The Museo Civico owns an 1817 sketch by Antonio Canova for the Monument to the Stuart Kings in the Vatican Basilica (e.c.166.1365). The sketch measures 43.5 cm high and 26 cm wide.1 The monument in the sketch includes two mourning angels and three relief portraits like the completed monument. The cardinal's hat in the pediment of the sketch was eventually replaced with the Royal Arms, which appear on the sketch between the two mourning angels.

Several gesso models for the Monument to the Stuart Kings can be seen in the Museo Canova in Possagno about 15 km northeast of Bassano del Grappa.
