A number of the most important sites of Jacobite interest in Scotland are well-known thanks to the efforts of the 1745 Association as well as several published works. 1 Perhaps less well-known are many of the sites of Jacobite interest which may be found on the Continent. This gazetteer is a first step to remedy that deficiency; it remains very much a "work in progress."

The gazetteer lists European sites connected with the Stuart kings-in-exile as well as sites connected with their lineal heirs up to the present day. Among the sites included are places where members of the Royal Family have lived, churches where the Royal Family regularly worshipped, and places where their final remains are buried. Also listed are institutions which own portraits of members of the Royal Family or other items associated with them.

The most developed sections of the gazetteer are those on Italy and Bavaria. There are still many other sites which have not yet been included.
