A Jacobite Gazetteer - Modena

The city of Modena is located thirty-five kilometres north-west of the city of Bologna.

The city was the birthplace of Queen Mary Beatrice, wife of King James II and VII. In 1717 her son King James III and VIII visited the town and in 1737 so did his son Charles Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Charles III). In 1799 King Charles Emanuel IV of Sardina (later King Charles IV) and his brother the Duke of Aosta (later King Victor) stopped in the town, but did not stay overnight.

For thirty-five years (from 1824 to 1859) the city was the main residence of the Royal Family.
